Turbulent Skies

Flight 182 crashes in San Diego, everyone aboard is killed, including Reza Roshtti, who is on his way to present the final plans for a top secret project to his employer, California Robotics. Giti Roshtti appears on a newscast after the doomed flight, Jaffar Hamid Harraj is smitten with the bereaved widow who lives across the globe in the United States.

When Jack Coward, an ex-marine turned private investigator, is hired to find out everything he can about this beautiful woman, Jack sets in motion circumstances that bring Giti and Jaffar together. Unfortunately for Giti, Jaffar Harraj has a deep, dark secret. Jaffar is not only a senior member of the Islamic Hamas Movement, but a psychotic killer.

Jaffar's aim is to use Giti's U.S. citizenship as a mechanism through which he can establish inroads into the United States, the Great Satan of the western world and land of the infidels. One of the missions of Islamic Hamas is to spread terror throughout the United States.

The United States newest lettered agency, NATA or National Anti-Terrorist Agency has some new recruits, Jack Coward and his life-long friend Don Ziegler. They team up with other members of NATA, including ex-Air Force Lieutenant Michelle Hough, to try and discover the plans of Jaffar and the Islamic Hamas, and how Giti is involved in the two.

my review...

When I read the description of this book, I thought it was going to be like many others…same theme, same setting, same kind of characters. But it really didn’t turn out that way at all. It was a quick read. The kind where you just can’t turn the pages fast enough.

Fabick created characters that had their own personalities. Characters that had faces and being, not just the cookie cutter type I thought they might be. This was a great thriller. Hope there will be more to follow.

read an excerpt...

“Donny, are you sure you looked everywhere?”

“Yes. I’ve gone through everything. I even searched through all the shirt and pants pockets of his clothes. What about you?”

“Yep, looked everywhere,” then Jack stopped mid-sentence and focused his attention to Donny’s right. “Donny, look beside you and tell me what you see.”

“I see a plant, not my idea of …”

“Exactly. It looks out of place doesn’t it? And another thing … feel the leaves, they look plastic from here.” Donny reached out to touch one.

“They are. How did you know?”

“My aunt used to have huge plants, just like that, big split-leaf philodendrons. She always warned me about licking my fingers after touching the leaves. Some kind of residue would make me sick.”

“What about them?”

“They were in huge pots. That’s what caught my eye. Look at the pot. I remember trying to move them around with my uncle, it took both of us to even budge them.”

“What about it, it has dirt in it.”

“Yes, but it’s so small, and why put dirt in a pot for plastic plant?” Jack grabbed the plant by its base and lifted it, complete with the pot, with almost no effort. “The thing’s hollow! I’d bet my life on it!”

Donny got down on his hands and knees to examine the pot more closely. “Jack, hold it right there for a minute. I think that this pot has two parts, I can see a joint two thirds of the way up!” Donny put down the address book, placed his two hands around the pot and started to manipulate it in different directions. In the clockwise direction it didn’t budge, but in the counter-clockwise direction the bottom portion rotated about two inches and separated neatly from the top.

“Bingo, Jack,” Donny said as pulled out a journal and some photographs that were hidden inside.

As Jack set the upper part of the plant down on the floor, Donny examined the book and announced, “It’s got dollar amounts, addresses and names—most of them from Las Vegas.”

“Must be pretty important information for him to have gone to all that trouble to hide it in this pot. Too bad we don’t have more time or the means to examine it more closely right now. Let’s go back to my place and see if we can figure out what we have.”

“Right, Jack. And I would suggest that once we know, we will have to pay Mr. Hussan another visit.”
