Reckless Beginnings Interview

What is the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
When I first met my husband over twenty-five years ago I was a young single mother with a five-year-old son. Everything I did was for my child. I sacrificed new clothes, nights out with friends or any kind of social activities at all. I worked three jobs to make ends meet. When
Christmas came around my husband (who was my boyfriend at the time) got into the discussion of past Christmas’ and I had told him that I had no family close by and it was just me and my boy.  I always made sure he had a good Christmas and couldn’t remember the last time I had opened a gift for myself.  Well, that Christmas just a few days later, he showered me with gifts to make up for all the last Christmas’ I went without. I thought that was really sweet.

How would you spend ten thousand bucks?
I have always wanted to visit Alaska. I have always been fascinated by it. I would take a month off and treat hubby and I to a dream vacation and come back feeling refreshed.

Where do you get your best ideas?
It all depends. Some ideas have come from movies I’ve watched, and a certain scene will spark an idea for a whole story.  I also get a lot of ideas while hiking or kayaking when my mind is free and able to wander aimlessly.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
For me it’s always the plot. I like to write the plot down and from there the story grows and characters are added as the story unfolds. Telling the story creates the characters and their personalities evolve as the story progresses. In other words, the characters grow with the story.

What does your main character do that makes him/her special.
Tammy Mellows is a strong-minded woman with determination and guts to see things through. She gives others the benefit of the doubt and second chances in life. She tends to put others first before her needs and suffers in the long run. She is an inspiration to the many other women and families in the world that find their lives turned upside down and in turmoil because of someone they love is a drug addict. Tammy shows that she doesn’t have to settle and that she has choices.
