My Review

This is a light mixture of history and romance. The emphasis being much more romance to me than historic. It is a good read though. A good suspense type novel.

Quite often when a story switches from one point of view to another it can be confusing but I didn’t find that to be the case at all here.

The whole book  is rather a mix of flavors and definitely an enjoyable read.

Having nobody else in the world and nothing to lose is terrifying, but it’s also liberating. No matter what I had to do, I would have the courage. I couldn´t disappoint anybody, nobody would cry over my actions, and I had nobody to please.

Things are as big as your proximity to them, and if you keep your distance, nothing can scare you or threaten you. Everything is just a matter of perspective, and the secret to surviving was to keep my heart safe and never expect anything from anyone. In the end, all feelings, good or bad, are only as powerful as you allow them to be.

I learned to live day by day, planning but not living for my plans, trying to solve just the problems I had in front of me and not worrying about things that hadn´t introduced themselves yet. As life had shown me, and Malena once told me, we had no control over the future, and it was as unpredictable as the ocean—it could drown a person if they thought they could tame it.

“We have an unusual robbery case where the suspect threatened the victims with a snake,” Ruddy explained. “We thought perhaps you’re missing one of the snakes from your reptile house, a cape cobra to be exact.”

His eyes widened. “A Cape cobra, the African snake? You’re certain?”

“Yes. The female victim is from the Durban area and familiar with them,” Ruddy said.

Packwood reached for the pipe in the desk ashtray and lit it. The scent of cherry tobacco filled the air. Raising his hand to light the pipe revealed C.D.P monogramed on his shirt cuff in pale blue. No garters or cuff protection needed.

After several puffs on his pipe, the director said, “We have a pair of alligators, several species of lizards, and turtles but no snakes at the moment. We only ever had one, a king cobra. It came from a Maharajah as a gift for the Queen. A snake from the hot subcontinent, it died in that terribly cold winter we had two years ago. No surprise.”

“Do you know of anyone who traffics in selling exotic pets?” Archie asked.

“I can think of three in the city. I can’t speak for outside London. The most active trafficker is Duff Dunbar. Duff’s what he goes by but I don’t know his Christian name. Then there’s Felix Lennon although I’ve never heard of him dealing with reptiles. He sells the big cats or their cubs for the gentry to show off on their country estates. Silly practice. The animals never live long. None of those people know how to take care of them. Sweet little cubs turn into four-hundred pound meat eaters.”

Both Archie and Ruddy took notes as Packwood took a few more puffs.

Packwood continued, “The third is a fellow I only know as Teddy, the badger man. I heard he got the name because he had a pet badger he took everywhere. Scuttlebutt from my keepers is he died.”

“Can you tell us anything else that might help us locate these men? Have you seen them and can by chance describe them?” Ruddy asked. If so, he’d get his sketch pad and come right back.

“Sorry, no. I’ve never met any of the traffickers personally.”

Ruddy wondered why Packwood never encountered a trafficker. The zoo seemed a natural client for them.

Archie beat him to the obvious questions. “Haven’t any of them tried to sell the zoo an animal?”

“No. It’s my policy to not deal with them and they know through word-of-mouth not to bother.”

“Why not? You have animals that die and need replaced, like the zebra last fall,” Archie asked, remembering the death had made the news.

“How the animal being offered was handled in transport is always suspect, which makes their good health doubtful. Our acquisitions are made through reliable sources or from reliable source breeding pairs.”

“Or ones that come as gifts to the Queen,” Ruddy added.

“One does what one must for the monarchy,” Packwood said with a resigned shrug.

If Packwood got his information from worker scuttlebutt, Ruddy guessed some of them had contact with traffickers. “What about your staffers who tend to the animals? Might there be some who know or have seen a trafficker?”

“I don’t know. I’ll ask at shift change when the most men are available. Now that I think about it, I recall hearing awhile back that if you go to Petticoat Lane on Sundays and ask for Duff, many of the vendors know him. If you manage to find one trafficker, he’ll likely lead you to the others. I imagine these types all know each other.”

Petticoat Lane...it figures, Ruddy thought. The place was a hotbed of shady vendors selling stolen wares.

“Even if we don’t have luck locating this Duff, someone there probably knows one or both of the others,” Archie said.

“Anyone who desires something not available through regular means, can discover a man or woman there with other means to find it.” Ruddy put away his notebook and stood. “You’ve been a great help, we appreciate it.”

Packwood and Archie rose too.

“I don’t know that my meager information is going to be all that much help to you, but I hope so,” Packwood said and shook hands with Ruddy and Archie.

“Whether we find a connection to the traders at Petticoat Lane or not, you eliminated the zoo as a source of the animal,” Ruddy assured the director. “And we have a start with the names of three possible suspects. It’s a good day for us, sir.”

But joining the protest has unforeseen consequences for Sasha, distancing her from Leah, who becomes jealous of Sasha’s new friends and finds herself on the opposing side, protesting alongside her group of new white friends.

As the tension mounts between the two bitterly opposed factions, a tragedy strikes and threatens to make Sasha and Leah enemies. Can they find a way to resolve their differences, putting them to the side and learn to accept each other’s viewpoints? Or is their long friendship finished for good?

As I pulled up into Ricardo’s driveway, Victoria and two other girls who attended Eastview were standing there holding signs that said, “Justice for Mitchell.” I was sweating more than ever. Scared of both the police and the girls I didn’t even know who were going to be getting into my car.

“I didn’t know you were doing signs. I would’ve made me one.”

Ricardo and some guys were busy placing things in the car's trunk.

“Are you okay? The time is now,” said Ricardo.

“I’m ready but a little nervous, too.”

“You shouldn’t be nervous. All we are going to do is go downtown and making a statement that we want justice. Once we are done, we’ll come back home. I won’t let anything happen to you but, if something breaks out, I need you to look for Victoria and get in your car and go home. And if something happens to me, I need you to look for Victoria then go to my house and warn my peeps.”

As the girls got into my car, Victoria told me I could march, and chant the same thing they were planning on saying.

I was missing Leah. This could have been a positive moment that we could’ve shared together. I was still hoping she would come to her senses and realize that our fight from our disagreement was all crazy.

We arrived downtown, and I parked in the garage.

“Why didn’t you park on the streets?” Victoria said.

“My parents always told me to park in the garage so nothing would happen to my car.”

She laughed at me and said, “Well, you are driving a Mercedes. I would do the same if I had an expensive car.”

my review...

This was a feel-good book. It’s about a young woman leaving her career and coming home to help her mother run the family business, an ice cream shoppe obviously. Well, actually an ice cream shop and more. This is not a heavy, deep book. It’s a quick read. It has characters you can’t help but love or hate.

But deep down there’s a little more to this book than you would think. There’s a little romance but fortunately only the clean kind. Yet there are issues, small and big. Things you might expect to find in a book like this but still things to make you feel, even think about.

Enjoyable read all around. Maria Imbalzano has several other publications. All have good reviews.

read an excerpt...

His sexy smile fluttered her heart. But truthfully, she didn’t know what to think anymore. His kisses had branded her heart and seared her soul. But they both knew she wouldn’t follow him out of New Jersey. Yet she wanted more, needed more. While they’d spent almost every night together dancing, and he’d often pop into the shop during the day if he was in the area, he

hadn’t asked her out on a real date.

In an attempt to suffocate the fire burning deep within, she hid behind her instructor role. “A waltz is a ballroom dance in three quarter time with a strong accent on the first beat and a basic pattern of step-step close.” Katie stood to demonstrate on her own, holding her arms out as if she had a partner. “The music has a certain cadence. Songs that you may know to waltz to are Blue Danube or The Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker Suite.”

She moved around the room counting one, two, three, one, two, three. “You’ll notice that the one step is held a little longer than steps two and three.”

He stood and slid into her arms. “This would be much easier if you had a partner.” His deep voice rumbled through her, disturbing all her cells.

“It would.” She raised her eyes to his and got lost in their depths.

Stormed

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Paula Quinene will award a randomly drawn winner a $15 Amazon/BN GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A medical doctor educated in the United States, passionate and fierce Liz Taimanglo must now fulfill her promise and return to her island home. Liz makes the long flight across the US and the North Pacific Ocean to Guam, uncertain of what her future holds. Heading into the epicenter of her family and prime typhoon season for the Mariana Islands chain, the disquiet of her heart threatens to do more damage than any typhoon might inflict on Guam. Little does Liz know, the man featured in the newspaper would indeed unleash delicious torment rivaling even a Category 5 super typhoon.

Manny Artero is adamant about fighting for his island, his culture, and the rights of Guam’s Chamorro people, after having been fired from his teaching job. That is, until Liz walks up to him with her machete-wielding eyes and her undying respect for the American military. Manny had vowed never to risk his heart again and to become a more vocal activist, but this woman threatens to challenge all his intentions about love and life on Guam. Brushing off the safer choice, he plots a series of surprises to change her mind.

For Liz, becoming a doctor of medicine was supposed to be the right path, but her universe imploded when her training failed to save the life of the most important person in her world. Though a former US Marine, Manny could no longer accept the loss of land, rights, and freedom that Chamorros continue to suffer in their own homeland. Helpless against the strengthening attraction between them, Liz and Manny must face not only their opposing political views, but the storms stirring in their hearts and the very land upon which they stand.
My Review...

Although this book covers some important cultural clashes, it is still a sweet and enjoyable read.

It’s plot touches on the need to save the culture of a land and a people and yet the need to sometimes move forward. Conflicting insights? Maybe, maybe not. It also touches on the turmoil we sometimes face and the barriers we put up to protect ourselves.

The book includes a lot about culture, and I enjoyed hearing about the various customs of people as well as their cuisine, habits, etc. One thing about this story is that there was never too much cultural definition. Sometimes an author includes so much explanation of a culture that it breaks up the story and makes it harder to read. That sure didn’t happen here. In this story the culture seemed to interweave as a mere part of the story.

No question that all of Quinene’s characters were interesting. She seemed to make a whole neighborhood of people that you could somehow remember, even identify with. I was not enamored of the passion parts of the story but that is basically because romance is not my favorite genre. Just because I didn’t like it didn’t mean it took anything away from the story.

Stormed is Book 2 of a series called “Forever Guam Book”. It can definitely be read as a stand-alone.

Liz stood still, blindfolded. Rearranging furniture? We haven’t gone in the house yet. Water tumbled against rock perhaps, not too far from her. The striking of a match. A whiff of smoke brushed by her nose. Soft music filled the air, but Liz couldn’t make out the words because she was on edge. His surprise must be out here.

“Almost done.”

She bit her lip and swayed side to side. I might regurgitate my lunch if he doesn’t hurry up. The sun had already set so whatever he was planning, he needed to be quick. “You have about killed me with all this secrecy.” After another minute, Liz felt Manny standing behind her.

“I hope you’ll think it was worth it. Ready?”

“Very.” Liz bit her bottom lip.

“Ai, nangga hit. Wait sa’ I need to close the light.”

Oh my God I’m going to burst. It took a moment for Manny to return to her side. Liz shivered even though it wasn’t cold. It was warmer where she stood. Wood crackled. A stronger scent of burning tĂ¥ngantĂ¥ngan wood filled the air. If she bit her bottom lip any harder her teeth would puncture the gum.

The blindfold fell away. She opened her eyes and her jaw hung open; not a word came out. Liz looked at Manny then back at the firepit in front of her, a low orange flame dancing. The sound of cascading water caught her attention again. A small statue of Sirena, Guam’s mermaid, sat atop a rock. It was set off to the far-right corner with water flowing around her in a waterscape. Liz looked up. Only dusk hung over them.

“We had a job. We did it. It’s done,” he said with a gravelly undercurrent in his voice.

It wasn’t done. Whatever had been there had left a visible, emotional mark on Noah. How had I missed it before?

“That doesn’t change who you are, what makes you a good person. In fact, I’m betting some of the reasons you signed up was what makes you that guy.”

“You sound like my mom. When I couldn’t stand being at home, she understood. I left, quit taking all the pills, and drove until I couldn’t anymore. I stopped at a gas station and saw a delivery girl dropping off parts to the exhaust shop in the back.”

“Jessup’s?” There was only one exhaust shop that Dad did custom welding for.

“Yeah.”

And only one delivery girl. “Me?”

“Yup.”

He was full of surprises.

It seems like a perfect contract, but will love get in the way?

Sean scowled, then acquiesced. “I don’t blame you.” He licked his fingers and wandered over to the wall full of photos that Brendan had hung earlier that morning. “Wow! Is that you on the Great Wall of China?”

Bren nodded, his mouth full of bread and cheese.

“And where is this?” Sean pointed to a black-and-white photo of Brendan standing in front of a huge clock.

Brendan swallowed. “Prague. That’s the world’s oldest astronomical clock. Amazing, isn’t it?”

Sean’s brow furrowed as he scanned the display of more than a dozen photos from places all across the globe—some that were obvious—Moscow, London, Paris, Tokyo—and some that Bren was sure Sean wouldn’t recognize, like Zagreb, Croatia, and Podgorica in Montenegro. “Good God, Bond, all those times you said you were ‘on travel,’ we had no idea you were all over the damn globe. Conny, Ace, come check these out.”

Bren grinned. “You never asked where I was going.”

“We weren’t sure we were allowed to ask.” Aidan rose from the table to amble over to the photo wall. “Who knew? If you’d told us, you might have had to kill us.” He peered at a framed photo of Bren standing in front of an ornate palace, his arm around an attractive brunette. “Who’s this and where are you?”

Bren stood and carried Griff, who was still gnawing on a chunk of bread, over to his brothers. “Oh, that’s Agent 99, we’re in front of Bojnice Castle in Slovakia.” He said, working hard not to crack a smile. . He couldn’t help being rather proud of his perfect Slovak pronunciation, particularly since it clearly impressed his gaping brothers. Because of the research and analysis work he did for several government agencies, he’d mastered, at last count, seven different languages, but that wasn’t something he boasted about. It was simply part of his job.

Sean stared at him over the top of his glasses while Conor looked askance and said, “Oh, sure, of course it is.”

“Agent 99?” Aidan chortled. “You’re kidding, right?”

Bren just smirked. They were so convinced he was a spy, it was a kick to tease them.

Blood & Mud

Blood & Mud
by John Baltisberger
Genre: Jewish Kaiju Horror

Austin Poet and author, John Baltisberger, (ARTIFICE OF FLESH, THE CONFIGURATION DISCORDANT) makes his St Rooster Books debut with a powerful kaiju novella full of Jewish mysticism, death, and destruction.

When a good man is senselessly murdered during Chicago's Gay pride event, Satan summons a horrifying monster of old, releasing both his anger and the monster in defiance of Heaven and humanity.

BLOOD & MUD includes an essay on Jewish occultism and mythology, revealing the rich tapestry of mystery and history that inspired Baltisberger and this harrowing novella.

John never thought he would write horror or darker fiction, he was planning on writing fantasy. But something about setting all of the occult and fantastical elements of fantasy just behind the backdrop of the modern world appealed to him, and he wanted to introduce the world to the incredible mythology of mythic Judaism.

He spends his time squirreled away fervently working on the next book or engaging in the 'Obliterate the Globe' project, only taking breaks to record episodes of Madness Heart Radio and Wandering Monster, or to eat, or to play with puppies. John lives with his patient and gorgeous wife Desiree, and maniacal and powerful daughter Aziza. You can find him and the project at www.KaijuPoet.com

Nathan Unwrapped

Nathan Unwrapped
by Bestselling Author Susan Saxx

Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance

Nathan buries his talent and has sworn off his art, and all romantic relationships, but when a bulldozer of a man comes to seek refuge in the dilapidated house Nathan is renovating, all the promises he made to himself collapse under the weight of powerful emotions.

A RIDDLE WRAPPED IN A MYSTERY

Nathan Gentael couldn’t bear to lose his family’s legacy, an old house on the tiny cove of Refuge Bay. He scraped together every penny he could find to buy back the derelict manse, and now he needs investors to help put it to rights so he can create a place for people like him: emotional wrecks in need of a safe place to get themselves together.

Okay, he isn’t a wreck, but he has turned his back on his passion, and believes by helping others, he’ll help himself. When it seems no one is going to help, a new investor, ex-military Augustine Jake Reiden, who insists on being called Og, shows up early and inverts Nathan’s reality. Nathan has secrets, but this bull of a man who has more bravado than anyone Nathan has ever met, is harboring mysteries.

Dark and closed off, Og is willing to risk investing in the house, but he has conditions, and it turns out one of them is he wants Nathan.

To My Readers:

A New Genre.

A writer loves creating new worlds.

To date, I’ve written male/female romance anywhere from sweet to hot to erotic, all in the Real Men series. I love this genre, and plan to continue writing in it.

Last year though, I decided to try my hand at writing male/male romance and found that I loved it, in a very special way.

I find the dynamics between two men so different than the dynamics I’ve explored previously. There’s something about two warriors, two characters with similar power bases figuring out how to come together. And the intense vulnerability when they finally do…

I hope you love this new series. My lovely beta readers, none of whom read m/m previously, all gave it a big thumbs up.

Dear Reader: I hope you take a chance on Nathan, and his story. He’s an amazing man, and just needs someone to pull himself out of his self-imposed prison…

…and you may just find a new series that you love.

Love,

Susan

Amazon Bestselling Author Susan Saxx is a top 2 Amazon bestseller with her small town military romance series, Real Men, currently over 10 books long. She has a passion for the small towns of North America, and sets her compelling stories in the north country (Jack's Bay), western mountain country (Terrence Point, Dawson Ridges, Golden) and in Chesapeake Bay (Refuge Bay), all replete with quirky yet big-hearted neighbours always willing to lend a hand—and an opinion, whether requested or not.

Susan also deeply loves Christmas, with numerous Christmas stories in her series, and adds more holiday books (including Valentine’s and Halloween), annually.

As she continues to write the beloved Real Men series, she is applying her passion for love without boundaries to the m/m genre. Her first book in the Men of Hope House series is garnering excellent reviews, with formerly m/f only readers exhorting others new to the genre to pick up the first in the series, calling it, “Pure Joy”, and ‘one of the best books I have read in a very long time’ – GoodReads.
