The Black Star approaches, heralding the cataclysm of Hell's Gate. The pawns on the chessboard have played the opening gambits as the Races vie for its power. Amnon, a young Demonblood consumed by revenge, finds himself drawn into a maelstrom of treacherous alliances and primeval magic. With a price on his head and outmanoeuvred by Druids and Trollbloods at every turn, he can't survive alone. An ancient Lycan who has lost his humanity is the only one he can trust.
my review...
I’m not usually a reader of demons, serpents, trolls, dwarves and such. It’s not my usual genre. However, as I read, I realized there was a
story here. A good one, of hurt, of loss, of betrayal. Amnon is a young man,
well maybe not a man, maybe more a being with a tail. Having lost his family
and friends to horrid strangers, he
feels he must hunt the evildoers down and kill them. As usual, things don’t go
as they are supposed to.
I’ve already said there was such a story here that I couldn’t
stop reading despite not being fond of wicked creatures in caves and castles.
Somehow, the author made this read so smoothly; those horrid creatures became actors
in a scene to me and as usual, I wanted the bad guys to lose and the good guys
to win.
I will say some of this is scary and some of it is quite
violent. It may just seem so because Michal Snaerravn is good at describing the
battles. The descriptive writing does paint a good picture.
This is the first book in The Chronicles of Hadúr. There is
a second book I have not yet read. However, I can’t imagine not needing to read
them in order. So…if you like all those “otherworldly scary” things, this is
your book, and it’s a good story too.
read an excerpt...
The four Druids carried me deeper into the labyrinth of passages and great caverns that perforated the mountain, leaving the company behind. They obviously knew their way or followed a trail that was invisible to me. The torches illuminated sparkling mineral deposits and bright veins running in the walls, and the passages multiplied, as did the number of small chambers. I carefully memorized what I could in hopes that I might somehow escape and trace my way back to freedom. After a few minutes, Tlacht’ga spitefully threw me to the ground. Not hard enough to injure me but none too gently either. Wolf bitch! Dornoll lit a small satchel smelling of lavender and other herbs unfamiliar to me, and I realized these were to reduce my resistance. They must have needed something badly from me to go to all this trouble. In their place I would have simply slit my throat and left the body for the wolves. They clasped hands and chanted, and despite my desperate attempts to focus my mind, I succumbed to the circle spell.
about Michal Snaerravn...
Michal Snaerravn is an outdoor enthusiast, an aficionado of the martial arts, and, above all, a sci-fi/fantasy nerd. A fan of all the timeless fantasy classics, he is eager to share his imagination: "Living in seven distinct cultures and reading hundreds of novels in four languages inspired a fantasy world that had to be revealed." He considers novel writing not for the timid, or for selling a million copies; it is for those who have a vision to share. "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
