My Review
This story that Shami Stovall has created is about something
we all have wanted at one time or another in our lives. To be successful, to be
honorable, to have a reputation as dependable. While this might sound like a
business self-help book, it is instead about a young man being raised and
trained to be a knight, working very hard to claim and earn the possession of a
dragon egg in order to have one by his side forever.
I have read many of Shami Stovall’s books. She’s a good
storyteller. One who writes descriptively enough to make both the good times
and the bad times vivid and understandable. If you read any of my reviews about
her books, you’ll find I am not a dragons and magic person. But somehow, she
caught me from the very first book. Maybe it was magic, but it sure worked, and
you do not want to miss one of her stories.
Read an Excerpt...
Zilvio’s voice carried the calm steadiness of someone who had seen too many mornings like this, too many young individuals standing on the threshold of something grand and dangerous.
His silver hair was combed back and held down with pomade. Deep lines framed his eyes and mouth, carved there by time and gentle smiles. His posture was impeccable, and I was a little envious. I had a tendency to slouch when no one was looking, but I had never caught Zilvio slacking, not even in the slightest.
Even the way he knelt before the hearth to arrange the kindling had a certain grace. He was always so deliberate and unhurried. His dark coat was pressed, and the cuffs and his white gloves were spotless despite his work.
Zilvio had once served my father, and his father before him. It was as though he were the steward not just of the house, but of its legacy.
Compared to him, I must have looked like a mess. My reflection in the window confirmed as much.
I was tall, broad-shouldered, and still not accustomed to the height I had gained over the last two years. My hair, a dark brown nearly black in the dim light, refused to stay combed no matter how many times I tried. And my hazel eyes—my mother’s eyes—betrayed more restlessness than I cared to admit.
“Excited for the egg assignment today?” Zilvio coaxed the first sparks into flame.
“Excited,” I said. “Or nervous. I haven’t decided yet.”
Zilvio met my gaze. “The two are often the same thing at your age, Master Richter. It is how one carries them that makes the difference.”
After a deep breath, I nodded. “Thank you, Zilvio. I’ll keep that in mind.”
about Shami Stovall...
Shami Stovall was born in Utah, lived in California, and now resides in the wonderful state of Kansas. After graduating high school, she went on to earn his BA in History from Stanislaus State, and then her Juris Doctorate from the Laurence Drivon School of Law.
Stovall’s favorite novel as a child was Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. It opened her imagination to possibilities she had never considered, and to this day she can still remember the impact it had on her.
As an adult (albeit still a kid at heart), her favorite novel is Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. Heinlein’s take on a perfect world again opened her mind to possibilities she had never considered, and Jubal Harshaw is the fictional character she most aspires to be.
Stovall loves telling stories, playing video games, John 3, John 4, and writing about herself in the third person.
