Looked Good on Paper

Looked Good on Paper: A McLaren MysteryLooked Good on Paper: A McLaren Mystery by Jo A. Hiestand
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This time Hiestand has stepped out of her comfort zone a little. McLaren and his best mate Jamie are off to enjoy a fishing trip, but when he stops to pick him up, McLaren finds Jamie out cold in his backyard. Did he fall, did someone attack him? What a tough thing to handle when the very person you usually run things by is lying in a hospital bed in a coma.
McLaren's regular cold case isn’t here in this story, but Hiestand’s same penchant for including (and hiding) red herrings has not changed one bit. There are more layers, even more crimes going on in the theme of the story. But this is not a mystery; this is more of the suspense/thriller genre. One that keeps you up reading because there are so many things you want to know the outcome of.

While this is a somewhat different type of book in the McLaren series, Hiestand is obviously talented enough to step away from her main style of writing. I enjoyed this view of McLaren. His wife, Melanie, was not in the picture much. However, she was the calm in the storm when McLaren was at home. The story may not have been mainstream, but we saw the same McLaren, mad and impatient and worried about his friend, but this time unable in some ways to work programmatically through a case as he usually does. Sometimes letting his own personal feelings get in the way of his methodical thinking.

A terrific addition to this series. Same wonderful characters and descriptive writing but different pictures. I often think authors should take a break now and then and change their direction or way of thinking. Seems that Hiestand has had the nerve to do so and ended up with a success.
