“Damme if the duke doesn't have better taste than I gave him credit for,” Lord Flint mused, suddenly sounding quite merry.

Felicity feared she was gaping. “Pardon? The duke?”

“The very one. You are quite correct. The command for you to appear came directly from him, even though in my hand. He wished you to present yourself here for my perusal. At least he was that kind about it.”

Felicity feared she wasn't breathing. “Perusal?” she demanded. “For what?”

“Why to see if you'd do, of course.”

Suddenly she was afraid. She took a step back and bumped into a table, making something rattle. She couldn't even find the words to challenge him. Her comprehension seemed to have disintegrated in the space of a kiss.

“Don't you want to know what for?” he asked.

Felicity closed her eyes, awash in humiliation. “Very well, if it will get me out of here.”

He chuckled. “Why, me, of course.”

Felicity's eyes flew open. “I beg your pardon?”

“I am usually more fond of blonds,” he admitted. “But I imagine I could learn to like brunettes quite well.”

Felicity stopped breathing altogether. “For what?”

She just hoped her voice sounded as ominous as she intended.

It obviously didn't. He was smiling again, his head tilted as if assessing her reaction, his hands back on his hips. “Well, marriage, of course.”

She knew she was staring, but suddenly she felt numb and stupid. “Marriage.”

He had the nerve to laugh. “You didn't think I'd want you for a mistress, did you?”

Felicity had never once fainted in her life. She didn't then. She reared back and slapped the laughing lord as hard as she could before stalking out the door.

My Review

This was an interesting read but I must admit I had trouble getting into the story at first. Part of the reason for my feeling may be because I was uncomfortable about the character Sakura. It seemed she was so cold, so distant from others, as if she felt she was a step above others or at least that’s how she came across to me. Then we have Jin who thinks every girl should be falling at his feet. These are both characters that in real life I detest so I didn’t know how I felt about the story. Except for what almost seems like a bit of fantasy, this romance struck me as if it were of Victorian times when fathers and royal families wanted only specific and fitting mates for their children. While, of course, Sakura’s parents were gone, it still seemed she was of this breeding. The idea of making matches is not unusual in any culture. I think as I said, I just got started off on the wrong foot because of the characters. I might add that any type of writing that can cause you to feel aversion or any other strong emotion can also be described as strong writing. I did enjoy the Japanese setting woven into what was really a love story. It made it have a different flavor and made for good reading.

He snatched her backpack and swung it around his shoulder.

“Hey!” she protested, lunging for it.

Jin stepped aside, evading her grasp. He smiled to himself, taking long strides toward his car. He could hear her feet going after him.

Mr. Fujimaru was already by the car, holding the door open. His guards stood waiting like goons by the sidewalk.

“Look,” she said, grabbing his elbow before he could duck into his car, “I don’t care if you rescued me. I am not going with you! I don’t even know you!”

Her words cut right through him.

She lunged for her bag again, but Jin threw it into the farthest corner of the back seat.

He looked at her tilting his head down, their height difference apparent. He thought about what she said.

She doesn’t know me? His forehead creased. Was he really that invisible to her? He felt like someone had just slapped him across the face. He took one long look at her before ducking into his car.

He was confused. Any girl would jump at the chance to be with him—she should have been honored and groveling at his feet for rescuing her! What was wrong with her?

He felt her slide into the seat next to him, her knees slightly touching the side of his thigh. But before he could think, she reached across him, leaning her upper body against his lap to grab her bag. Jin froze.

She straightened back up, clutching her bag to her chest. Her eyes met his with a piercing glare, and a wave of heat suddenly swept over him.

Jin looked away, landing his gaze on her reflection on the car door window. Even with an angry face, she still looked so beautiful.

Jin smiled, tilting his head to the side to get a better look. I should stop this, he told himself, but it was too late. She was too interesting to be left alone.

What are you waiting for?

Everyone has endured the endless traffic light, the queue that goes nowhere, the elevator music piped through the phone line. But what of those periods in your life when everything seems on hold? When you can't do the next thing in your professional or personal life because you can't get to it?

Waiting—be it for health, a life partner, a child, a job—can be an agony. The persistently unrealized goal feels like an endless road. And hope's constant deferment can be exhausting. A firm answer against the thing you're hoping for—"no"—might be easier than this constant lack of closure. It might be easier to give it up.

But what if waiting means to be something else? Waiting doesn't have to mean idleness. Our prolonged state of need might teach us to look beyond the desired goal to something infinitely better. We find lessons on this throughout the Bible and, if we are paying attention, in our own lives.

Rather than fostering frustration, periods of waiting might have great truths to tell us. It might show us that hope is worthwhile. Waiting might even be a gift in and of itself.

My Review...

An interesting read. In some ways a little different from the normal romance story. Normally we don’t read about a barista with an Arts degree falling in love in the coffee shop. That’s what this book is about and much more.

I really enjoyed the art and culture aspects of the story. I thought it added some dimension to the story.

I have said many times in my reviews that romance is not my genre, but this is a sweet, tender story. One that makes you wonder what will happen as you turn each page.

In researching, this looks like a first book to me. If so, the author has done a great job with both the storyline and the flow of her writing making this an easy, enjoyable book.

Marvin heads into his oversized master bath to start the shower. He is sensitive when it comes to nature, so he has a top of the line water purification system that allows him to use the ocean water in his home. It siphons water from the ocean, removes the salt and impurities, and leaves him with the smoothest, cleanest water in town. He is hopeful that the city will one day take advantage of such a resourceful product, but he isn’t surprised that they haven’t. The water is silky and hot as it rains down on his body. His showerhead is automated with voice command, so he can tell it if he wants jet stream, raindrops, massage or pulsating. Marvin’s home may be more modest than most in the area, but he never held back on the luxuries of things he liked. He turns the steam feature on as he shuts the water off and grabs his towel. He loves standing in the steam, with it smelling the way only steam in a clean shower can smell. He has always been very in touch with his senses and felt them all deeply: touch, taste, smell, hearing, vision, and the unspoken sixth sense. He is unconsciously aware of his intuition because his analytical mind has yet to bring it forth; however, it will happen when the timing is right. He steps out of his steamy fortress, his hair awry, and drapes his towel over the shower door. As he steps in front of the mirror, admiring his sculpted body, he wonders if Talie might be up, if she was even awake.

“It is your reputation,” she informed him, archly as she tucked her gloves under her coat’s belt. “You must know that. If you aren’t in the habit of drawing your gun and shooting at people, then how did you acquire it?”

“Through wagging tongues and shameless liars,” he answered in a contemptuous tone. “I am fast on the draw. I don’t deny that. But I’m not eager to pull the trigger. I will, mind you, in defense of my life or someone else’s.”

My Review

This is what might be called a young/adult thriller type of genre. I am not a young adult. Sometimes I’m not even an old adult (just a grown-up kid) but I really enjoyed this book. It sort of grabs you at the beginning...a young girl, pretty well raising her younger brother alone because their dad can’t seem to get past the death of their mother. And yet, this particular story is not that story. Rena, or Regina, seems to be a strong young girl who is fearless and the writing to paint a picture of her is the kind of writing that gives you the feeling you can handle anything too. Almost a personal sort of uplifting feeling in the midst of chaos and fright.

The characters, especially Rena and her friend Tony are crafted well with intense personalities and are two people who have had their share of problems. The story keeps you right on the edge, wondering what will happen. It was a good read, a quick read and also well worth the time. As I said before, I enjoyed it as an adult, but it is also clean enough it to be read by young adults. Rather refreshing actually.

Tony cleared his throat. “You said your dad was kidnapped?”

“Last night. Coach and my dad were friends. They joined the Army together.” Why was I babbling? Tony didn’t need to know my life story. “I showed up this morning because I thought he might know why these people were after my dad.”

“Did either of them tell you?”

I shook my head and looked at Tony. “The man who beat up Coach Andrews—he said he’d give me a head start before hunting me down.”

Again, Tony glanced in the mirror. “He didn’t happen to say he drives a black Lincoln, did he?”

As I spun in the seat and leaned over the headrest to see, the belt cut into my neck. Behind us, a black car crept closer with every second. Someone in the passenger seat leaned out of the window with a gun. “There’s a man with a gun following us and I’m not freaking out. At least, I don’t think I am.”

“No, you’re cool.”

With a bitter laugh, I turned back around and dropped down on the red vinyl seat. “Cool? When are you going to ask why I’m not afraid?”

Tony hit the brakes and made a turn that left me choking from the belt’s grip. “Right after you ask why I picked you up.”
