Favorite Hobby and Why

Wednesday Musings. Feel Free to add your own blog. Go to Long and Short Reviews - Wednesday Musings

I have two Favorite Hobbies and I can't begin to separate or determine which is most important. Both have been so entertwined in my life for so many years that they are pretty well me, not just hobbies.

MUSIC and BOOKS

The WHY of my hobbies, I owe all to my wonderful hard working mom.

I was lucky enough to have a mother to somehow get me to voice lessons once a week from the time I was 13 (always on Saturday as she was a full-time working single mother). How she did it and paid for it I'll never know. Because of those lessons and because of her I have spent a life filled with singing, performing, teaching, and all of the other things that go with a life full of music.

I was what is called a Library Latch-key child. Was I really there every day after school until my library closed? No. But, I was very close to it. My mother had a reading rule. Only 2 or 3 books during the week; no more than 10 on the weekend and I always had to have one non-fiction book.

Poor lady, she was alone except for me and I had my nose in a book all of the time. But what a good upbringing. A life of living in all of the worlds you wanted, building your vocabulary every day, hiding away behind a book whenever you needed to. I still probably read for all of the same reasons.

Wish now & then my beautiful mother could be at the other end of the kitchen table or standing at the ironing board while I read.

  1. Your mother sounds like an incredible person.

What style(s) of music do you sing?

  2. At least your mother encouraged you to read. Most don't do that nowadays. Good post!

  3. I love to sing, but my voice is absolutely more suited to a choir than solo (something my choir teacher told me many times, lol). I have voice envy! Books, of course! I actually worked in the school library from the time I was about 8 y.o. Dewy Decimal is my second language. Thanks for stopping by earlier!

  4. I can relate to your situation growing up - my parents split when I was 13. I'll never figure out how my mom managed to raise the three of us on her own and still have time left to spend with us.

Books and music are my life, seriously. I about cried the other day when my 17-year-old told me she wanted a guitar so she could learn to play over the summer. :)

  6. I used to sing classical and music theatre, but I haven't done it in years. As I can't read music I was never given solos but I always liked choir.
