Harbinger

In Praetoria, the elite do not have any special talents. Then why is it the only imperial princess is having vision-like nightmares? These dreams foretell the destruction of her world and the death of her family, and every day they gain strength in their horror.

The return of a particular imperial rook changes the tone of her dreams, providing her with much needed relief. But this too is perplexing, for he is a rook and she an elite. The law strictly forbids a union between the two.

Yet four little female moiohs scheme to bring them together, providing the path to secure their future, a future threatened by traitors who would use the princess as a way to steal her father's throne.

my review...

This was not a story I thought would be as engrossing as it turned out to be. I knew it was a fantasy and yet I think it is the writing style more than the genre that makes it very readable.

The word harbinger itself means forerunner or sign. The idea of an indication or harbinger is not always bad, but often enough looked upon as a warning or a signal of something bad to come. In this story, the princess begins to have dreams that are harbingers of what is to come…death and destruction, of course.

This is not a long book, and most of the time it moves very fast. There were only a couple of times I felt it slowed a bit, but in truth it might have been because I had to look back to figure out “who was who” so to speak. Still, a read I enjoyed and think others will too.

read an excerpt...

Keira races up the stairs, her breathing erratic from the short burst of energy. Once on the balcony she weakly opens the thick-paned gemsend doors to her bedchamber and crosses the threshold in despair. The trembling in her limbs is just one more horrible reminder that her body is slowly deteriorating. With a sob she stumbles to her bed and collapses onto the white counterpane, her heart heavy with apprehension.

After crying for what seems like hours—in reality only a few minutes—she turns to her side and curls up, hugging her knees to her chest. She stares vacantly across the room, wondering, not for the first time, why she is being inundated with images of her family and world dying. After all, as many have pointed out, she is not a mystic seer but an imperial princess, a member of the elite. Mystic abilities are beyond her ken. Yet as each day fades her terror over their fate grows, until all that fills her heart is the certainty that something is coming to destroy them all.

She closes her eyes as she remembers the times she related her dreams to others only to have well-meaning friends and family dismiss her apprehension as the terrible grief that follows a tragic loss, telling her that this is about the loss of her brother. She grits her teeth in frustration. It is this lack of understanding and unwillingness to find out more about her nightmares that angers her the most. She knows that, in holding on to old truths, something vital could be missed, and in the end the stubborn ignorance of the elite could cost all of them dearly.

There is some small comfort in the master mage not completely dismissing her visions as mere madness. Since most of her dreams involve her family and some form of gruesome death, Master Cyrus has advised her father and brothers to be extra diligent in protecting those they love. For as he pointed out, “No one is safe all the time, and anyone who thinks they are is a fool. It is best to err on the side of caution.”

Hence her confusion as to how Ware VanDraye managed to get into her family’s private garden. Security had been increased tenfold for the past five months. And with an unknown threat on the loose, no rook would let a non-family member into the garden. To do so would invite at best banishment for dereliction of duty and at worst an execution. So who let Ware in, and why?
