“She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.”

***~~~***

Griffith Crowe, the "fixer" for a Chicago law firm, falls for his current assignment, Helena Nicholson, the beautiful heir of a Tech Sector venture capitalist who perished in a helicopter crash leaving her half a billion dollars, a Learjet 31, and unsavory suspicions about her father's death. As he investigates, the ex-Navy SEAL crosses swords with Helena’s step-brother, the Pentagon’s Highlands Forum, and an All-Star bad guy somebody has hired to stop him. When Griff finds himself on the wrong side of an arrest warrant he wonders: Is he a player or being played?

Lawyers and Lovers and Guns…Oh, my!

my review...

Well, I love rugged troubleshooters as characters and this one is half-Native American and a rancher to boot. I just knew he was handsome and suave and smart. Then as you read on you find that Griff works sort of “when he wants to” and most often for a very swanky law firm. This is not a legal book though, no legal politics here other than the intrigue type. This is also not your everyday P.I. story either. The book and its storyline wind around Griff, a character as neat as I described in the first few lines; one that easily retrieves things that people either need or just want. All through legal terms of course or at least it always starts out that way. Griff is a man who is comfortable in many worlds. A world full of beautiful women, high finance and people who fly more than they drive. A man who suffers no fools. My kind of character.

You probably already know I liked this book. All the characters are well-defined I just happened to “take” to Griff most of all. I might even have been a little jealous of the beautiful blondes he had falling for him. I began to wonder if one or both of them were quite possibly not in the game for love. Then again that’s what intrigue and thriller type genres are all about isn’t it?

M. T. Bass has several books published. All have good reviews.

read an excerpt...

The low, almost husky yet honey smooth female voice poured seductively over Griff and blanked his mind as he turned into the pilot’s lounge. Though dimly lit, as they all were to facilitate napping, her red dress glowed like a hearth, yet she still wore her sunglasses as she studied her iPhone’s screen, slouching and sitting askew in one of the La-Z-Boy recliners with her legs crossed. Griff’s eye was drawn to the slow but rhythmic bounce of her stiletto heel. Predator had become prey. She took off her Jackie Ohhs, looked Griff up and down, then took a deep breath.

“Mmmm…tall, dark and dangerous…just the way I like them.”

Griff locked onto her blue-gray eyes and surrendered. He leaned against the door jam. His inside voice taunted, No plan survives contact with the enemy.

“I couldn’t help but notice Lance’s Escalade on the ramp. He is a conniving bastard, isn’t he? Of course, he is a lawyer, but he does excel at it. Not to mention the unseemly delight he takes in it.”

“Always has,” Griff said. “As long as I’ve known him.”

“Then, you really shouldn’t be surprised.”

Griff smiled, realizing it wasn’t Mayor Daley’s fault that he was still on the ground in Chicago. “Name’s Griff.”

“Yes. I know.”

He waited, his face an implacable facade, one molded and hammered into place on the Coronado Beach while enduring BUD/S training. “You got a name? Or will you answer to minx or vixen?”

“Hmmm…you like the ‘X’ words. I prefer Helena.”

“So…how long will we be playing Three Card Monte with modern art…Helena?

Paradox

Paradox by Catherine Coulter
            published by Simon & Schuster

My Review

This was my first experience reading Catherine Coulter and how lucky I am that she has written so many books for me to read. The title most certainly matches the storyline. I can’t help but wonder how an author lays out such an intricate plot. There must be a blueprint drawn up first like an architect would draw or maybe a mathematician with a long equation. One thing about this deep and complex plot is
that it is not hard to follow. This is a book you must focus on when reading because it has plenty of twists and turns but then this isn’t a cozy. It’s a complex novel of the crime fiction genre.

When you read a book and immediately like the characters and the relationships between them, I think this is due to the skill of the author in defining and describing them to a point where you can get to know them. I immediately liked Savich and Sherlock. I felt the same about Ty and Sala. Well, this isn’t fair…I felt the same way about Gunney and her Godfather too. Heck, I guess I liked them all, except for the bad guys, of course.

Another thing that was done well is the technique of combining two very serious, very complex crimes at the same time. This switching back and forth can often be confusing and very frustrating but somehow Coulter manages to keep her storyline weaving throughout all the time. Making you only anxious to read more about each crime and wanting to get back to it to know what is happening. Quite a feat or maybe just excellent writing.

Freaking Fast

Futuristic YA Action Adventure

MY REVIEW
I loved this short, sneaky, serious and yet full of whimsy book. I read it in 2 days. I just couldn’t put it down. Can a book about killing someone be whimsical? Well it can if David Pereda writes it. He seems to be able to write any kind of book. I love the way he always gives us an education all the while trying to fool us into thinking we are having a fun read.

This time it was math; last time in Havana Blue it was the social and economic history of Cuba and the hard times of a boy growing up in Havana. Yet all the while I was having a blast reading both books. I enjoyed the analogies he made between real life and mathematical equations in this book and how even though the story switches back and forth between the current and the future he still managed to keep a symmetry to his storyline.

He has provided another very different and very enjoyable story.  The characters in this latest book were unlike any others, yet as alive as his characters always seem to be. Intelligent young characters with very finite minds and yet still young and uncertain. Living through and growing up with the same questions and dreams we all had no matter which generation we grew up in.  I loved the futuristic setting. I could almost believe I had my own robot and my own flying car, sort of like the Jetsons but now, in today’s technology very little of it seems very far away or impossible. In fact, everything he wrote about seemed like a normal progression of how things will be in another 40 years. In other words, it all seemed very believable.

Is this a book for young people? I think so, but I don’t think there is any age that wouldn’t enjoy it.  I obviously did.

David Pereda has several books with great reviews. Check them all out.

P.S. Dear David, I tried to use at least a few simplistic mathematical terms just to tease you. Hope I used them in a proper way or should I say from the proper angle:)

Read an Excerpt
Year 2066
8:30am. Asheville, North Carolina

Today I’m going to kill the love of my life.

This deliberate act should not to be misinterpreted for what the sensationalistic media will surely call a crime of passion, because it isn’t. There’s nothing passionate in what I am about to do. My action is premeditated, has been planned for a long time, and will be executed for the benefit of our city, our country, and our crumbling world – as well as for my own peace of mind.

I know people say things they don’t mean all the time, especially when they are stressed out, upset, or angry. People lie either to hurt others or to protect themselves or simply because they like to lie. I swear that every word written here is the truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God. May He also forgive me for this murder I’m about to commit.

I have chosen this date for a reason. Today is my birthday, and the anniversary of our first kiss, fifty years ago. I turn sixty-three years old today. Five decades ago, I would have been considered an old woman at this age, gray-haired and wrinkled, and possibly
overweight. But that was then. Nowadays, thanks to the medical advances of the past fifty years, of which I have partaken freely – they’re there, right, so why not make use of them? I’m in the prime of my life. I look and feel not a day over thirty and have the sculpted
body, the vigor, and the mental acumen of a highly intelligent woman in her twenties.

When I was a teenager, there was this beautiful model named Cindy Crawford, who in her sixties looked like she was in her late thirties and was an example to women all over the world. She was to me. But the world has evolved, and that was then, and this is now.
Were Cindy Crawford alive today she would look like my older sister or maybe my young-looking mother, even though we would both be about the same age.

But I digress. I have, perhaps, too much on my mind. Images of the past keep streaming through my head. I think of the love of my life, him, and wonder what could have been but wasn’t; what was and shouldn’t have been.

I feel like crying as I see my life play out, in black-and-white like an old movie, on the screen of my mind.

Make Me a Match

Fantasy

Widower Mark Cage is rusty at relationships. He owns the micro-brewery that supplies
the restaurant and bar at St. Augustine's premiere spa resort, Essence, with its award
winning local craft beer. And he’s been focused on building his business and raising
his teenage daughter ever since his wife died ten years ago. Nothing else.

When he runs into a sweet kindergarten teacher who is vacationing in St. Augustine
and staying at Essence everything changes. A sudden, inexplicable encounter with a mystical tree
known for its legend of bringing lovers together, convinces Mark the schoolteacher is
his destined match. However, his encounters are disastrous.

His only hope of persuading the woman he wants to even consider a date with him is
working with Essence’s on-site relationship guru, Athena Sullivan. A reknowned relationship coach, Athena is the opposite of everything Mark wants in a woman. She’s feisty,
independent, and challenges him at every turn. Sparks fly between the two from their
first meeting and flare into a blazing inferno as Athena helps him navigate the dating scene.

After a series of too-perfect, mis-queued dates, Mark realizes maybe the woman of his
dreams is not a sweet schoolteacher after all. Maybe she’s a feisty, independent, sexy relationship coach who stands up to him and is everything he’s always wanted or needed in a woman.

If he opens himself up to true love, he might just find second chances at love are possible and that his perfect soul mate is closer than he thinks.

MY REVIEW
Not a totally unrealistic story about a widowed guy with his young daughter.  She’s ready to go to college and very worried about him being alone. He hasn’t dated in the 10 years since his wife died and his daughter buys him three sessions with a “relationship coach”. Basically I’ll define a “relationship coach” as someone to help him learn how to socialize again and definitely move him out of the caveman age. And of course, she hopes he’ll meet a match. The outcome is not only funny but also entertaining to read. This has a little of the paranormal included as his wife communicates with him a bit; at least he thinks she does. His mother seems to have a second sense but some might argue all mothers do. There is a lot of humor here and the characters are well defined.
I was going to say that I thought the sex was a little more explicit than I would normally be comfortable reading.  However…I can’t even find a way to define why I felt this way. So, I’m going to explain it another way. I’m not sure that this romance had any more sexual content than any other. Since I can’t even define what this means, you could say that Lucas is very good at scene description. Making readers feel any emotion with mere words on a page is what I’d call real writing. The characters were definitely made to come alive through Lucas’ descriptions and the whole story was well-rounded. I think the humor lightened certain parts of the story too. Anyway you define it, it is a story about life aspects many of us go through.

While I might have been a little uncomfortable reading about the sex here, I didn’t miss a page of the book.  Read it and see what you think. Come back and let us know what you thought.

EXCERPT

Two days later Jamie came bounding into his office at Ancient City Brewery. “Hey, Daddy-o.”

“Uh oh. She wants something,” Mark commented to no one in particular as he pushed away the stack of invoices in front of him. Running a brewery was work he didn’t usually mind. Today, though, his focus was shot. “What do you need now, dollface?”

“Nope. I don’t want anything. I’ve got something for you. It’s a surprise.” She waved a folder in his face.

He went to grab for it and she snatched it back. “Hold on. Not so fast.”

Mark settled back into his chair and laced his hands behind his head, prepared to wait for the reveal. “Okay, so what’s this all about?”

“Weeeeeeeell. It’s good for you, but you’re not gonna like it.”

“Sounds like what I used to tell you about eating your Brussel sprouts and broccoli.”

“Eww.” Her face comically contorted. “You don’t need to get nasty.”

Amazing. The girl still hated broccoli and Brussel sprouts to this day.

“It’s in no way as bad as Brussel sprouts.” She blessed him with one of her brightest smiles. He was in so much trouble.

“This is going to be bad.” He groaned. “Out with it. What is it? College is ten grand more? You want to go to school in the Grand Caymans?”

“Can I? Is that a possibility?”

“Ah, no, not even a chance. You’ve been accepted into the University of Virginia. That’s where you’re going.”

She pretended to pout for a few moments, then smiled. “Okay. Charlottesville it is, then. Sooooo. Ready for your surprise?”

“Girl, you better share before you burst.”

She studied him warily. “All right. So. Here’s the deal. I bought something . . .”

“This never ends well for a man.” Mark sighed and pulled at his ear. “How much did you spend?”

“For me, what is a mini-fortune.”

Mark groaned. “How much?”

“A thousand dollars.”

His front chair legs slammed to the concrete floor. “You what?”

“Now, listen. It’s a good cause.” Her face started to get red. “And, well, I spent my own money.”

“Jamie, what money?”

“I work part-time.”

“Yes, and you were saving your money for school. Books and such.”

“Right.” Her gaze skittered away. “I’ll get by. Most of the books are online anyway these days.”

“What did you spend the money on?”

“I told you, I spent it on you.”

This was like pulling teeth. “How?”

“Aight. Remember the part I said would be good for you, but you wouldn’t like?”

“Yep.”

“That’s this part . . . I purchased a three-session package for you to meet with a relationship coach to help you with your dating skills.” The words rushed out in a tumble, then she held her breath.

He didn’t like it. Not one bit.

When he didn’t say anything after a few seconds, she blew the breath out.

“What the hell is a relationship coach? And why do I need one?”

“Come on, seriously, Dad? I don’t see women beating down your door.” She cleared her throat. “And it’s important to me to know you’re settled before I move away to school.”

“What the fuck?”

“Language,” she reprimanded.

“Who’s the daughter here? And who’s the parent?”

“Not my fault if you act so immature and cuss all the time.”

“I’m an adult. I’m allowed.” He frowned. “You didn’t answer my question, what is a relationship coach? And why did you waste a grand on one?”

“Someone who helps you navigate dates and meet new women. Kind of like a matchmaker in the old days.”

“I’ve already met the woman I want to date. Daphne.”

“Yes, but she ran away.”

“She did not. Why is everyone saying she ran? I did not scare her away. She was whisked away by Jezebel.”

“Jezebel who? I don’t know a Jezebel.”

The sexy blonde at the bar with the big boobs who’d been hanging on Jason, propositioning him while his fiancé chatted out in the lobby with Daphne. That Jezebel, that’s who. But Mark wasn’t about to say those words to his daughter. “Never mind.”

“So, you’ll have to meet with her. She’s agreed to help you through three dates, and the aftermath.”

“Aftermath? You make it sound like PTSD.”

“Well, might be a little shell-shock on her part. You’re not the easiest man to deal with these days.” Jamie crossed her arms over her chest. “Just saying.”

He growled, “Why does everyone say I’m not easy? I’m the pleasantest man in St. Augustine.” It was not lost on Mark that he was glaring at his daughter while he asserted his amiability. Damn.

“Because you growl a lot?” She contemplated him, an expression etched on her face that declared him deranged. Or stupid. “And you scowl.” She came around the desk to place the folder in front of him. Then she smoothed his forehead, her thumbs manually flattening his brows. “There, that’s better. You need to practice. You seem a little scary to outsiders. Only those of us who love you know differently.”

He hugged her around the waist, burying his cheek in her belly for a second before he let her go. “You’re all that counts.”

“No, you need to get a woman to love you. Not your family, who must love you no matter what.”

He gave her the stink-eye.

“There you go again. Stop it.” She swatted him. “Meanie. You need help to lighten up and I have just the person.” She tapped the folder. “She’ll be great for you.”

He opened the folder to find a brochure describing the services provided, the mission of the counselor or coach, and a checklist of what to bring to the first session. Shit. He couldn’t do this. He tossed the brochure onto the desk. “I’ll get your money back.”

“Nope. No can do. It’s non-refundable.” She crossed her arms defiantly.

“You’re under eighteen. It’s not legal for them to take your money. They have to give it back.” He grabbed his keys. “I’ll go now.” He picked up the brochure to find the address. “Where did you say they’re located?”

“She’s based at Essence. But Dad, you’re not getting my money back. Gabby signed for me. Besides, you need to do this. Please. I can’t leave for college in the fall if you’re not settled, or at least on your way to making better inroads with the female population.”

“Wait a second. What do you mean?”

Her mouth firmed. “I mean I won’t go. Period. I see how lonely you are. Once I’m gone, it will only be worse. I can’t leave you all alone, knowing how handicapped you are in the relationship department.” She shoved the brochure he held toward him. “It’s only three sessions. It will be good for you and it’ll give your daughter peace of mind. Please do it. For me.” Her eyes filled with tears.

Dammit. He didn’t do tears.

Mark sucked in a deep breath through his nose, slumping in defeat. “All right. Whatever. I’ll do it.” He shook his finger at her. “But you are leaving for school come August twenty-fifth.”

Jamie squealed and launched herself at him, arms tight around his neck. She kissed him on the cheek and let him go. “Thank you. Your first session is tomorrow. You won’t be sorry, I promise.”

She waved as she departed.

Mark sat back down in his chair and flipped through the brochure. On the back page, the picture of the relationship coach jumped out at him.

Jezebel.

He was already sorry for his promise.

A Hasty Grave

Amateur Sleuth

Finding a large hole on one’s property is one thing; finding a body in it the following day is quite another.

Rona and her ex-husband, Johnny, also discover a sheet of paper at the gravesite, symbols looking like code or treasure hunting glyphs.  What’s it mean?  Does it have any bearing on the man’s death?

Add to this mix the old Finley-Tennet feud and an elderly Finley’s nebulous recollection of James/Younger outlaw days. Does she have the clue to the cache’s location?

When a second death pushes Rona and Johnny into a deadly game of hide-and-seek with the killer, she learns—nearly too late--just how deeply Johnny still loves her.

MY REVIEW
A really enjoyable mystery. This could almost be called a cozy but it has all of the twists and turns of a somewhat more complex plot. This time Rona and her ex seem a bit closer and McAlan keeps you hoping all the way through that they’ll get back together. However, that’s something you’ll have to find out by reading the book; at least as far as this reviewer is concerned. There are once again a few historical hints in this book as there were in the first one. I’d call it historical flavor more than anything else. I loved all of its hidden messages and the puzzles that Johnny and Rona try to solve. Don’t get me wrong, this was not a deep subject, or a hard to read, heavy book. It is a fun read that will keep you wondering who is the bad guy or girl, along with of course, a few dead bodies. You know…all the things a mystery is supposed to have.
Jessie McAlan seems to be as good at describing her characters and keeping them alive as she was in the first book.  The small town of Klim and its inhabitants are still working and playing and of course spreading gossip faster than a speeding bullet. And then there’s Linn House. It sounds as beautiful as ever with its beautiful Mississippi river accompaniment flowing by and McAlan does it justice by her beautiful descriptive writing.
This is the 2nd book in her series called “The Linn House Mysteries” and it is as good as Book 1 titled “The House on Devil’s Bar”.  Wonder when Book 3 is due?

EXCERPT
She’d set her laptop on the coffee table and was getting out dessert plates and mugs when the bell to the side door rang. She cracked open the window, saw it was Johnny, then ushered him inside.

“First time in quite a while I’ve been given the eye.” He gave her a light kiss on the cheek. “Wouldn’t a peep hole in the door work better?”

“I just wanted to be certain it was you. Can you install a peep hole?”

“Nothing to it, especially for a man who’s put in those picture windows in his shop.” He flung his cap onto the kitchen table and shrugged out of his jacket. “Why the precautions all of a sudden?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’m not busy the rest of my life. Except for October 28th. I’ll be occupied with the gallery’s opening that day. But the other ten thousand nine hundred fifty days are yours.”

“How long is that?
“Thirty years, give or take a leap day or two. I want to make sure I’m not skimping on our time together.”

“You plan on living to one hundred seven?”

“I don’t see why not. I have to make up for our year of separation and divorce.” He dished two servings of the pudding cake into the bowls, set them and the mugs on the tray, and took them into the den. “So, what’s this long story that requires precautions? I love stories. I was brought up on stories.”

“This isn’t Little Red Riding Hood. Sorry to disappoint you.”

“So it’s something else with a big bad wolf.”
