Death and the Social Climber

Death and the Social Climber: The Second Ann Audrey Mystery
Death and the Social Climber: The Second Ann Audrey Mystery by Winnie Simpson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have read by Winnie Simpson, and although I don’t usually read “backward” in a series, I might have to in this one. Such a fun cozy. Set in the South, it has all of the southern charm built in with its amateur sleuth and what I’ll call the nosy aunts...

 You’re not broken. You’re overstimulated.

They sat on the beach with their backs to the ocean, faces in their phones, watching clips of someone else’s vacation. As Heather Henderson stood a few feet away, ready to capture the perfect Cabo moment, she realized we were promised more: more connection, more freedom, more possibility — not a life spent refreshing feeds.

Handed devices before we were taught how to live with them, most of us inherited this algorithmic world. We learned to let notifications and endless recommendations choose for us in small, quiet ways, until the choices no longer felt like choices at all, and we found ourselves scrolling through life instead of living it.

The problem goes beyond casual screen time. It is unconscious time — the moments we surrender without realizing the cost.

Drawing from her years inside major tech companies, including Google and Uber, Heather Henderson invites readers to ask:

Did I choose this, or was it chosen for me?

If you feel wired but tired, connected but lonely, or busy but empty, this book is an honest look at how we lost presence — and a guide to reclaim it.

My Review...

My first instinct in beginning this book was not to reclaim anything, but to recoil. To rail a little at anyone who thought so much controlled my life or, for that matter, that I didn’t control my life. However,…as I read a further, I began to recognize myself a little. I do check my email fairly often. I do wonder sometimes if I got a text and didn’t hear it.

I will admit I am not a person who would rather write someone a grievance than speak to them in person. I have often spoken in person when maybe I should have kept my mouth shut :) But I still wouldn’t write someone an email about my unhappiness. I’d face them. But this might be my generation. My whole life hasn’t been spent with a phone in my hand or a computer in my face. When they came along, I thought it was the best thing in the world and still do. Everything I ever wanted to know is at my fingertips, at least for those with a little bit of common sense.

But Heather Henderson describes an awful lot of people I know. She’s done a good job of it in several ways. This is a very clear, readable book. This is sometimes a subject that can have that academic tone to it or that self-help look. But this is more about the feeling and/or the truth. Read and take what you want from it. I think that will touch more people than any other way of crafting a book on this subject can.

The Riddle Maker

The Riddle Maker (Porter Beck, #4)The Riddle Maker by Bruce Borgos
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love books with good characters, and these were so alive it could have been a tv show. Porter Beck, now a small-town Sheriff has his hands full with a pregnant wife who’s also a cop and tough as nails too. His whole staff is tough, fun, close, and Borgos made them very real. But the other thing Borgos did was make a possible serial killer, long unknown, rise from the ashes.

This was “I couldn’t put it down” writing. And I am hard to impress. I don’t give 5-star reviews lightly. They have to be books that have characters with personalities, a plot I just have to know more about, and be quite readable all molded into one book...
