Don't Let Him Go

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Candace Gleason passed the bar, landed a great job, and is making a killer salary--basically, all of her dreams are coming true. Until she’s assigned to keep the boss’s petulant son out of trouble.

Jack Morrison is the rebellious black sheep of a mighty real estate family. He runs a nonprofit whose mission is to save poor people from evil corporations, like the one his own family owns. He is obnoxious, ridiculously charming, and insanely hot. He is the bane of Candace’s very existence.

Sparks fly from the moment they meet.  Candace suddenly has more to worry about than keeping Jack out of jail. She has to keep him out of her heart.

EXCERPT:
I folded my arms across my chest and glared at Jack as he moseyed into the room. “You ambushed me.”

Jack came to a stop a few feet away and nodded. “I did.”

“That’s it?” I spread my arms out and leaned forward. My voice rose despite my effort to control it. “That’s all you have to say?”

“What do you want me to say? You’re smart. You can see what I did back there. I used you for my own gain.”

“You’re a prick!”

“I’m not surprised you feel that way. But I am sorry you had to get caught in the crossfire.” He moved to the couch and took a seat in the middle of it, purposefully giving me the high ground.

He slung his arms over the back of the couch casually, making him look like an arrogant ass. And that is exactly what I thought of him at that moment. So I called him on his supposed apology. “Are you?”

“Yes, I am. But you’re not innocent, Candie. You put yourself in this position by going to work for Morrison.”

“It’s Candace!” I shouted, on the edge of insanity.

He didn’t respond. He just looked at me with that infuriatingly handsome face and waited, an amused grin dancing on his face.

MY REVIEW: Not usually my genre but I sure couldn't put it down.

Really a nice romance with a little bit of suspense added in. Has a very believable story line. Being a woman and having a career, this was something I could really identify with. Working very hard to get a job and finally a good salary often makes that job very important. Important enough to fight to keep it and Candy or Candace as she asked to be called, felt it was that important. Working night and day to get that college degree and become a lawyer was right at the top of her list. However, being put right in the middle of problems in an organization sometimes makes it difficult to make the right decision. Sometimes the right thing and the ethical thing can become a little mixed up.

There were not too many main characters in this storyline. This seems to give an author a chance to develop them more fully; give them a personality and Harris most certainly gave her characters a personality. This novel did have romantic scenes. I'm calling them scenes because they were written well enough to feel like you were watching them or were a part of them. I'm going to be my honest self here and tell you that sometimes romantic novels make me uncomfortable. I'll describe it as the feeling you get when someone gets in your space.  Somehow, this novel did not make me "squirm" or try to get away. I enjoyed reading it. I thought there was a little bit of suspense.  Just enough to create that feeling of sitting on the edge of one's seat.

The above all adds up to my really enjoying a genre not familiar to me but one that I had better pay a little more attention to.  At least if they are written by Kay Harris.  This is Book 1 of a new series called "I Want Morrison". Hope Kay Harris is working on Book 2.

  6. Do you listen to music when you write?

  7. I really hope the author, Kay Harris, sees this as I would like to know her answer too. As for me...my background is in music and for some reason I cannot read and listen to music. Somehow the rhythm of whatever is on and I tend to hum. Then I can't concentrate on my reading. Guess I can't multi-task too well. :)

  9. Slehan, still hoping we'll hear from Kay Harris but...I'm a mystery nut. I love a cozy on a snowy day and I love Lawrence Block, Stuart Woods, C.J. Box, Harlan Coban, Robert Crais...well the list goes on and on. How about you?

  10. Sorry for the delayed response everyone. I was out of town and then I had technical difficulties. Here are the answers to your questions:
I don't listen to music when I write because it's too distracting. But I am a huge fan of music and in fact all of my book titles are related to songs.
Some of my favorite authors include: Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Nicholas Sparks, Harper Lee, Shakespeare, and Eli Easton. (Romance and love with a little classics built in)
What makes me write? The only answer I have for that is that it makes me happy. I love it!
    Thanks for asking your questions!
    -Kay
