Slaughterhouse

It's the anniversary of the date he lost his family and Jack doubts he'll ever find those responsible. Depression has taken hold, and he pulls out his Beretta for the last time. As he fingers the trigger, Ray shows up with the identity of the man who’d killed himself in Jack’s house weeks before, leaving a note simply saying, ”I’m sorry.”...

Jack soon finds himself dragged into San Francisco's underbelly and his life threatened at the hands of the city's deadly Chinese gang, the Jade Dragons. When things become more dangerous, Jack must keep pushing forward, even knowing it could mean his death because the gang's leader, Li Zihao, may have the answers Jack’s looking for—who destroyed his family and what happened to Leah.

Is Jack ready for the truth?

my review...

I have read each book in this series, and I still like the Jack Slaughter character as well as I did in Book 1. Tough, caring, withdrawn, and somewhat in despair from losing his daughter and possibly his wife, Jack Slaughter gets drawn into another case. A man left a note in Jack’s family home saying, “I’m sorry” and then killed himself. Did the dead guy have something to do with hurting Jack’s family and ruining his life?

I was a little critical of K A Lugo’s first book in this series, Slaughtered. I felt the author jumped around and made it difficult to follow the story. There were particularly good parts in Book 1, most importantly the characters she has created. It seems the author has grown with each book. The stories have grown better and better. I think this is a combination of good stories and an author growing better at plotting each time.

Each of these books can be read as a stand-alone although I think you’ll enjoy them all. I’m hoping for a Book 4.

read an excerpt...

Jack looked up when the nurse, Markus, rushed through the door to his side. “Are you all right, Mr. Slaughter? The monitors are going off at the nurses’ station like a Saturday night disco ball.”

“Sorry, Markus. Just trying to get comfortable. Not easy when you’re weak as a puppy.” Jack glared at Haniford.

Markus’ bright smile accentuated the deep color of his complexion. His almond-shaped brown eyes with their long lashes hinted at a mixed heritage.

“Don’t you worry, honey. You’re still a big dog.”
