A deceptively complicated retrieval throws Nicole into London's criminal underworld

Travel to London and retrieve Abigail Fletcher, a 17-year-old in a study abroad program at the prestigious King’s College in London. The assignment sounds simple enough.

But Abigail’s return is put on indefinite hold when she’s charged with the murder of her boyfriend, a former student at King’s. Nicole believes Abigail has been framed, but the victim’s tight- knit circle of friends and relatives are most unwilling to talk to an American detective. Further complicating the case, is Abigail’s defiant and uncooperative demeanor.

As evidence stacks up against Abigail, Nicole discovers that she herself has become the next target. Nicole’s first solo case abroad as a private detective has just turned a lot deadlier than she ever anticipated.

“Wait!” she said. “I heard you were a friend of his. I’m looking into his background. Won’t you just answer a few questions?” He paused, looking at her through a crack in the door.

“I knew him when I was little”—he pronounced it lit-ull— “in primary school. That’s a long time back, innit? He was a year older.” He gave a self-deprecating smile. “I thought he was a good bloke ‘cause he stuck up for me when the bullies were beatin’ on me. But later…"

"Later? What happened then?”

The young man shrugged, closing the door more so he was peeking through a slit.

“Anybody who talks about it…” He shook his head and shut the door.

About Nancy Boyarsky...
Nancy Boyarsky is the bestselling author of the award-winning Nicole Graves Mysteries.

Reviews compared The Swap to the mysteries of Mary Higgins Clark and praised Nancy for contributing to the "women-driven mystery field with panache" (Foreword Reviews) as well as for their "hold-onto-the-bar roller coaster" plots (RT Book Reviews). Kirkus had special praise for The Bequest, concluding, "Boyarsky's weightless complications expertly combine menace with bling, making the heroine's adventures both nightmarish and dreamy." Her most recent mystery, The Entitled, fifth in the series, received praise from Foreword Reviews for "vibrant street scenes, swift pacing, and Nicole's steely nerve." It was chosen by Apple Books as one of the most anticipated books of the fall.

Before turning to mysteries, Nancy coauthored Backroom Politics, a New York Times notable book, with her husband, Bill Boyarsky. She has written several textbooks on the justice system as well as articles for publications including the Los Angeles Times, Forbes, and McCall's. She also contributed to political anthologies, including In the Running, about women's political campaigns. In addition to her writing career, she was communications director for political affairs for ARCO.

The first book in the series, The Swap, won a gold medal Erik Hoffer Book Award. In response to the controversial and incendiary themes explored in the third Nicole Graves mystery, Liar Liar, Nancy Boyarsky was invited to present at the American Library Association Annual Conference in 2018 on "Women-Driven Mysteries in a Post #MeToo World."

Each book of the Nicole Graves mystery series can be read as a stand alone. Readers are invited to connect with Nancy through her website.

My Review...

Well, this one read just like the blurb above says. I sat on the edge of my seat yelling "somebody pay attention". Sort of like when you are yelling at the tv :)  I'm not going to tell you I read it in one sitting. It's your normal size book, 340 pages. I can tell you I did not want to put it down and get up to do chores.

I have not read a lot of this authors’ books and she is prolific. Of those I have read I can tell you that the suspense in this one is no different than the others. The tension she creates is something you can feel and the characters she creates so vivid it makes you feel what they feel.

This is an author with a lot of books and great reviews. How could you go wrong? Read it.

What begins as a prank ends in murder.

The campaign for the U.S. Congressional seat was referred to in the press as “Mr. Smith goes to Washington versus the carpetbagger.” The popular local candidate gets the majority of endorsements, but his opponent’s wealthy, out-of-state family is willing to do whatever it takes for him to win.

Penny-wise Investigations, a discount detective agency located in a mall, is hired to find out who is stealing the local candidate’s political signs. Two of their investigators, Cameron Chandler and Yuri Webster, not only catch the thieves in the act, they find a body next to a pile of stolen signs, proving that Campaigning Can Be Deadly...

Derailed

Derailed by Mary Keliikoa Banner

MY REVIEW...
How many parents have been totally fooled by their children, even when those children are adults. How many just sort of didn’t want to know the truth or maybe didn’t want to admit it to themselves? Even worse, how many have had to find out the truth after it’s way too late?

Even though Kelly Pruitt is a “newbie” Private Investigator, she intends to help just such a family as mentioned above. I liked this character from page one. She walks the walk and talks the talk. This book has all the  elements for a good P. I. book. A great main character, a little family turmoil, a young cute kid, a good case, and an underlying humor of her ability to laugh at herself. Oh, and a big old dog. Gotta have a dog, don’t you?

I think you can probably tell I thought this was a good read. It’s a quick read, but it has its mystery and its suspense. The push and pull of a woman wanting to work, a woman having to prove that she can be successful while also being a valuable part of the family added to the story. It wasn’t overdone. Each piece seemed to be interwoven through a good story only to add more interest.

Derailed is Book 1 of a series titled “A Kelly Pruett Mystery”. It looks to me as if this may be a debut book for Mary Keliikoa. Let’s hope she doesn’t get “off the track” and not get Book 2 written again soon.

Synopsis:

Derailed by Mary Keliikoa

A dying wish. A secret world.

Can this grieving investigator stay on the right track?

PI Kelly Pruett is determined to make it on her own. And juggling clients at her late father’s detective agency, a controlling ex, and caring for a deaf daughter was never going to be easy. She takes it as a good sign when a letter left by her dad ties into an unsolved case of a young woman struck by a train.

Hunting down the one person who can prove the mysterious death was not just a drunken accident, Kelly discovers this witness is in no condition to talk. And the closer she gets to the truth the longer her list of sleazy suspects with murderous motives grows. Each clue exposes another layer of the victim's steamy double life.

Can Kelly pinpoint the murderer, or is she on the fast track to disaster?

International travel means international danger.

Lacey Devaine is a four-year veteran of a spy ring which fronts as an exclusive escort service, Miss Belle's Travel Guides. Maintaining her cover is Lacey's number one priority to protect the integrity of the operation she works for.

While on assignment in Tokyo, a nosy newspaper reporter threatens to blow the lid off a scandal that will put dozens of innocent lives at risk. To protect her cover, Miss Belle is called in to act on intelligence Lacey has uncovered.

Can these beautiful, intelligent, and deadly women complete this assignment in time and emerge unscathed? Or will this mission be their last?

My Review...

This was fun and very suspenseful. The setting of covert missions being run by a business of escort services might sound insulting to women. However, this is written to show the intelligence and strength of women. Very refreshing, all tied up in a story of adventure, humor, and action.

This was one of those “can’t put it down” type of books. I enjoyed every moment and most certainly hope there will be a Book 2 in the near future.

It's Not Over

It's Not Over

Former FBI-profiler Eva Rae Thomas is back in a heart-pounding novel of suspense. It’s so shocking it’ll have you sleeping with your lights on.

Peter and Mary Marshall went on a vacation with their son and daughter but returned without their children. They went missing from their hotel room one night while the couple was downstairs in the restaurant for dinner.

They never saw them again.

Ten years later, the Marshalls have put the murder of their children behind them, moved to a different state, and had another child, a son.

When he disappears during a vacation trip to Florida, the parents are suddenly in the limelight again. Public opinion seems to be that this can be no coincidence. These things don’t happen twice to the same people, do they?

Former FBI-profiler, Eva Rae Thomas is doing well in her life, and things are calm until an FBI agent suddenly shows up, asking for her help with the case of the missing child.

The kidnapper seems to have a message for Eva Rae since she was the one who supposedly solved the case ten years ago.
