Risk-averse ER nurse, Alyssa Beckman, is about to lose her job because of yet another bad decision. In order to put her life back on track, she books a week at a rustic mountain resort to ponder her next steps and rejuvenate. But when she arrives, she learns she’s enrolled in boot camp, an adventure program far out of her comfort zone...

While there, she meets Gabriel Sutton, a world-travelling high fashion photographer who is in danger of losing his clients as well as his status if he doesn’t start following the rules. While hiking, kayak racing, and participating in team challenges, sparks fly between Alyssa and Gabe as they encourage each other to take different life paths. But will those paths lead them farther apart or bring them closer together?

Things rarely work out the way we plan, and that’s what happens here. What did work out is a nice read. A nice read with a little bit of everything. Some laughs, sad times, good times, familiar times, and some romance. I will be the first to tell you that romance is not one of my favorite genres, especially if it gets a little steamy. It’s just as if someone was in my space. There is a little steaminess here, but it doesn’t seem like a romance. I think the interaction and dialog between Gabe and Alyssa makes this into a story. In other words the interplay makes what I will call the “innerplay” not emphasized:)

There are other parts of Imbalzano’s writing that added greatly to this story. She is excellent at descriptive writing. So much so that I could picture myself right in boot camp in the mountains.

Gabriel Sutton pulled the camera strap over his head and sat on the nubby, bisque sofa in his cabin. He peered at the LCD screen of his favorite Nikon and scrolled through today’s photos. While the foliage was beautiful in the afternoon sunlight, he was much more interested in his human subjects—one in particular.

He should have gotten her name—the woman who scowled and frowned. A photo with her hands on slim hips made him chuckle. But the photos of her holding an ice pack as she tended to the lady who had fallen were really beautiful. Long brown hair cascaded over one shoulder, and the concern etched on her face was so real, so emotional.

Her dewy skin glowed flawlessly from the distance, but when he zoomed in, a trace of freckles ran over the bridge of her nose, and the rosy glow came from a sheen of sweat, more apparent on her brow. Full lips slightly ajar were frozen in mid-sentence, and sympathetic, chocolate-brown eyes studied her patient’s face as she cradled the woman’s wrist tenderly in her hand. She was kneeling, bent over at the waist, a discarded sweater in a heap beside her.

As though drawn to his human subject, a ray of sun shot through leafy branches, casting a filtered column of light right behind her.
