Your Daily 5
So you have now scheduled your week with your big projects and important tasks, and you have put in activities to complete them that relate to your goals. Now it’s time to form a habit that holds you accountable for the actual completion of those tasks. I call these My Daily 5.
When I start my day, I take a look at the things that are blocked and then I make a list of 5 things that I MUST complete that day before I put my feet up and relax. I used to find myself starting with all the easy stuff on my long to-do list so that I felt productive. Then something would come up during that day that needed immediate attention, or the kids needed something, and before I knew it the day was over. I was busy but ultimately unproductive because the important things regularly got pushed aside. Now I schedule those important things to get done first thing in the day and I don’t quit until My Daily 5 are done.
Can you imagine where you would be right now if you did five things every day towards your goals? I know that most of you are working full time and juggling family life, etc., but at least one of your five items should be something that is taking you one step closer to the life you want to create. Remember, there’s a big difference between being busy and being productive. You can answer a lot of emails, pay a lot of bills, or do a variety of other menial tasks, but are you actually being productive and moving forward towards your goals? Always focus on the things that are super important first.
Back in chapter 2, we talked about getting up early. When you are up early in the morning and there’s no one else around, you can get a lot more done. You’re not having to answer phones, and the emails haven’t begun flooding your inbox yet because nobody is even awake. Use this time to create your Daily 5 and get to work on the most important things on that list. I promise if you instill these habits into your life, you will see your productivity soar. Before you know it, those goals you set will be your reality.
