Collectors, Cats & Murder

My review...Book 4 - Collectors, Cats & Murder

Another really fun book from Kathy Manos Penn. You know how sometimes when you talk to your dog and/or cat you could swear they know what you’re saying? Well this mystery has some pretty special  pets and Leta, the main character, communicates well with them.

This is a small cozy full of British humor and more importantly in my mind...full of books. You wouldn’t have to be a book connoisseur to enjoy the mystery. I love all types of cozies, but I must say you will enjoy the reference to the book titles, the puns, and the little bits of occasional sarcasm if you love books. This is a good mystery with a little more depth than a cozy. No matter your preferences, this is a fun read with some good laughs.

I love the LOL Detective Agency and I’m not going to tell you what it stands for. I’m going to be stubborn and insist you do a little detective work yourself. You’ll have to read a few more Dickens & Christie books but let me tell you, every member of the Agency is as fun as the main characters. Manos Penn gives us enough everyday life descriptions to enjoy their personalities be they quirky or not.

As I’ve said this was a fun, quick read for me. It got even better when I realized Leta was just like me...surfing FB now and then and playing WWF. We could be sisters!

Collectors, Cats & Murder is Book four of a series titled “A Dickens & Christie Mystery”. All of the titles in this series have good reviews and...I hope we’ll “hear” from Dickens & Christie again.

Picture me sitting serenely at my desk surrounded by my four-legged office assistants. The dog warms my feet, and the cat provides the purr-fict background music. I sip hot tea, sift through handwritten notes, and type as thoughts take shape. Such is the joy of writing.

Homecoming

Fiction (Family Life), Fiction (Pets and Animals), Fiction (Urban)

Date Published: August 15, 2020

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

You cried with Hachiko. You got spooked and then laughed it off with Scooby Doo. And you fell in love with John Grogan's incorrigible Marley. But you have yet to meet a dog quite like Super Bu .

After years of arguments on the matter, the Bera family has finally decided to bring home a dog.

Ajay has wanted a dog since he was a child. He has fantasized about every version of his future life around them.

His brother, Arun, would love to get a dog as much but doesn't mind not having to clean up after one.

Ajit, their father, also wants to get a dog. He just wants to feel the love of a dog again, like he used to when he was a child.

Barnali, Ajit's wife, loathes the idea of having a dog in the house. She spent her childhood praying for only one thing, that she shouldn't get married into a family that has dogs. And until now, she got her wish.

But now, Ajay has finally worn out his mother's resilience and the Beras are bringing home a dog. Can this be just the homecoming that the dog or the family had anticipated?

Read now and find out.

Excerpt

The lazy young lad who would sleep through a freaking earthquake suddenly didn’t need anyone to wake him up. It was a special Sunday morning in September.

Ajay was up at five in the morning. Not once did he hit the snooze button on the alarm clock. He did not sleep through the ringing alarm until someone else in the house got perturbed enough to shake him awake. He heard the alarm within the first few seconds of it going off. He woke up and switched off the alarm, so as not to wake the rest of the family. He did not lie back down over the scattered sheets on his bed like he usually would on any other day.

He got up, headed to the bathroom, freshened up, brushed his teeth, came back out, changed into an ironed, royal blue t-shirt and his grey jeans, and he sat down on the edge of the bed, yet to be made, posture annoyingly better than how he usually sat, and waited. He did not have to get up that early; there wasn’t an exam to get to, no lectures at college that he feared he would be arriving late for, no potential girlfriend who had invited him to meet somewhere for a breakfast date.

It was a Sunday, but Ajay was ready and all dressed up to hit the city by 5:30 in the morning. Yet, this was only the second most unusual thing about this day, because this was also the day that the Bera family had finally agreed to bring home a dog.

The Journey of Bell

The Journey of Bell
A True Depiction of Obedience to Christ
by Merideth Deeds
Genre: Nonfiction, Pet Memoir

For thirteen years, my beloved Bell loved me unconditionally. Through the many challenges of life that I faced, she was always there by my side with unwavering loyalty and dedication. Her obedience to me is a beautiful depiction of how we, as Christians, should strive to please the Lord who is our master in Heaven. God’s Word ensures us that all good things come from above, and I think that includes our four-legged angels on Earth who love and honor their masters so fiercely and bring us so much joy.

God has put writing on my heart in order to inspire and encourage others that are currently or have experienced similar tribulations in life. My hope is that my stories will give others hope and comfort through the trials they face throughout their lives.

My first story, Lonely Road of Faith, is inspired by real-life events and me and my husband's broken paths that eventually led back to each other and to God.

Single and Looking

AT FIRST, DAISY IGNORES HER CAT'S DATING ADVICE.

Daisy will turn 40 in eleven months and has never married. Her family figures Daisy is a loser because she is still in college trying to avoid paying off her student loans which have amassed over 22 years of a miseducation. And all Daisy has is a cat to keep her company. To make the crises worse, her cat begins talking to Daisy, when she is sober! The mess of Daisy's life is even kookier because the cat is cursing and smoking now and drinking more alcoholic beverages. Mm, there must be a connection to all this flowing alcohol, which may explain the bubbly in Daisy's brain. Her sisters and mother insist on setting Daisy up on six blind dates and all the men are named after liquor.

A heartwarming, LOL book that will make you smile.

Read an Excerpt:

Her heart stopped at the sound of claws coming down the hallway.

What is that rolling sound?

There was the sound of heavy breathing at the door followed by, “I brought you a bottle of wine, dearie,” the cat said, cackling like an old witch.

She tiptoed over to the door. “I suppose you have a poisoned apple, too, in that filthy paw of yours.”

“I didn’t bring a wormy apple. Would you like a nice unopened bottle of Pinot Noir instead?”

Daisy twisted a fist in her yellow Adult Cinderella nightgown. Her big toe stuck out of her slippers. She did not drink this early in the day or was even up on a Saturday morning, but her sisters had banged on the bedroom window. Aunt Davina slammed a picture of Jesus against the window and screamed, “Pray to God, Daisy, that The Man watching football from the clouds will toss you a husband as good as my John! Maybe you will catch a Matthew or a Peter!”

“I dated a Peter once and he was really a dick,” Daisy yelled back.

Given the day she was having, a morning drink could hit the I-feel-good-about-myself spot right on.

Daisy should act strong and tell the cat to go catch a mouse.

On the other hand, a stiff drink would calm the lizards jogging around her brain. The mind racing was due to her new mad-as-a-hatter relationship with her cat.

“Uh, a glass of wine would be good,” she squeaked.

Ruff Justice

Ruff Justice by Laurien Berenson
    published by Kensington Books

MY REVIEW

I never miss a book in this series. I wait with baited breath for a new one to come out. Now these are cozies so I am not saying they are deep, complex books but they are fun, somewhat complex, always entertaining and have lots of dogs in them. Let me tell you one thing...in order to enjoy these books you had better like dogs and you'd better like learning everything about how to show a dog. I happen to like this part of Berenson's books just as much as I enjoy Melanie Travis and her family.

Laurien Berenson has created a delightful family and over the years they have changed and grown right along with we readers. As an author, you cannot write 22 books covering a few characters in just a few years’ time without having the creative ability to keep those characters alive and interesting and a group of people your readers identify with. Otherwise, not a soul would read past Book 10. Berenson has obviously accomplished this.

This is Book 22 in the series titled "Melanie Davis Canine Mystery". Book 22 can definitely stand alone and be enjoyed without having read earlier books.

However…all of Berenson’s books have good reviews. Don’t miss any of them.

WATCH FOR 2 GREAT GIVEAWAYS

Blurb:  Comic Con is in full-swing and all is well. But no sooner does the biggest event of the year begin before a mysterious wave of identify thefts overshadows the grand affair.

While Nala tries to rein in Karly’s efforts to use the con for dating purposes, she also finds herself the target of a brazen thief. If she and her crime-solving canine companion don’t find the culprit, her bank accounts could be wiped cleaned.

Can Nala and Max bring an end to the chaos before it’s too late?
MY REVIEW
What if you rescued a dog from the shelter and found out it happens to talk? Odd as it might seem this is not a book of the paranormal genre, but it is a really cute cozy mystery about a P I named Nala with a talking dog as a partner. I don't know if this sounds odd to you or not but the dog is as diva-like as possible and coupled with Nala’s sarcasm the banter between them makes for a fun read.

While this might sound like a whimsical cozy, it had fun, really well-developed characters. Characters with much more depth than you would expect in a cozy.  It’s also a really modern cozy with your computer nerd friend and parents who take cruises as well as a mom who has a business. In the middle of a larger town for most cozy settings, a huge Comic Con is going on with all of your favorite comic superheroes attending, well at least people dressed in their costumes, and it all makes it a little crazy and fun. I liked this up-to-date city-slicker kind of cozy mystery.

M.K. Scott has plenty of series with really good reviews. This one happens to be Book 3 in a series titled “The Talking Dog Detective Agency”.  While this book can easily stand alone as a good read, it looks to me like we’d better check out her other books too.

Read an Excerpt:
What happens to a girl who can’t say no? Most people would assume she’d end up pregnant before her fifteen birthday. The idea made Emma wrinkle her nose at the impossibility of that happening to her. It would involve someone asking her to do something more interesting than pet sitting their parrot or run papers to a client on her way home. Truthfully, she didn’t mind too much. She didn’t have children to drive to soccer practice or the need to start dinner for her partner when she got home from work. What she did resent was people assuming, since she had no life, she’d automatically do the things they had no time to do.

Delivering papers wasn’t in her job description. Technically it wasn’t on anyone’s in the office. The others were smart enough to make themselves scarce, while Emma merely took the papers and agreed to go out of her way to Carmel to deliver them before the end of the workday. The only perk was she got to leave early to arrive while the client’s office was still open.

After she delivered the papers, she exited the art deco building, only to almost bump into him. She couldn’t say she didn’t notice him. He was the type of male who drew all eyes to him by simply existing. He’d erupted into the parking lot riding a wave of sound and testosterone. Instead of a surfboard, his mode of transportation was a Triumph motorcycle. The bike drew her eye first. Back when she was barely thirteen, she longed for a motorcycle. Her fantasies, however, didn’t include her hanging onto some guy steering the bike. It was always her bike.

The book is on sale for only $0.99!

About the Author:  M.K. Scott has a Fantastic GIVEAWAY on her blog too. Don't miss either one. See below to enter both.

M. K. Scott is the husband and wife writing team behind The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries and The Talking Dog Detective Agency. Morgan K Wyatt is the general wordsmith, while her husband, Scott, is the grammar hammer and physics specialist. He uses his engineering skills to explain how fast a body falls when pushed over a cliff and various other felonious activities. The Internet and experts in the field provide forensic information, while the recipes and B and B details require a more hands-on approach. Morgan’s daughter, who manages a hotel, provides guest horror stories to fuel the plot lines. The couple’s dog, Chance, is the inspiration behind Jasper, Donna’s dog. Overall, both are a fun series to create and read.
