Lately, Chloe’s been leaving Sophie out, and she doesn’t know why. Sophie does everything she can to make her best friend happy, but it’s not working. Then Chloe asks Sophie to fib to a teacher to help her out and she learns the true meaning of friendship.

My Review...
I know I’m going to sound like a broken record but once again Tonya Duncan Ellis has written another fun and yet really pertinent story for middle grade readers. This time she takes Sophie on the lifelike journey of knowing what being friends really means, and being left out and sometimes wondering what the right or wrong thing is to do. What a hurtful thing when you are that age.

This book tells a story so poignant I could have sworn I had that same feeling in my stomach that I had in 4th grade when my friend didn’t invite me to a party. That’s how real this is and yet it’s fun to read too. The author has made these characters totally identifiable through her series of Sophie Washington books that you know the whole family, even Sophie’s friends.

I’m going to make the same suggestion again here too. Don’t just hand this book to your kids. Take some time and read it yourself. It has a good message for everyone.
Well you can probably already tell I like this series of Sophie Washington books. There are many; all fun and all with a good message. Check them out.

read an excerpt...
“How was the field trip?” Mom asks as soon as she picks me up after school.

“Can I get some of that medicine in the pink bottle when we get home?” I answer.

“Isn’t that for when you have the runs?” asks my little brother, Cole. “Ewww, Sophie has diarrhea! Did you know diarrhea is hereditary? It runs it your jeans.”

“Then that means you have it too, Poop Head!” I say, leaning over the car seat to hit his boxy Afro with my notebook.

“That’s enough you two,” says Mom, raising her voice. “Cut it out. How do you know what ‘hereditary’ and ‘genes’ mean anyway, Cole? You’re only eight years old.”

“We learned about it in science class,” he answers. “You get genes from your parents that tell your hair color, eye color, height, and other things that make you who you are.”

“Impressive,” says my mother. “I guess all this money we’re spending on private school is paying off.”

“Really, Mom?” I say. “Cole was being totally gross with me, and you didn’t even say anything about it.”

“You’re right, sweetie,” she answers. “That was inappropriate of you to speak to your sister that way, Cole. Please apologize.”

“Soorrry,” he says with a smirk.

“He’s so fake,” I say and roll my eyes. “I could really be sick, and nobody cares.”

“Well, what happened?” asks Mom. “Did you eat too many funnel cakes, or try those greasy fried Oreos?”

“No, I rode the Killer Whale and some other big rides, and afterwards my stomach hurt.” I rub my mid-section.

“Wow!” exclaims Cole. “Jacob says that ride is dope. I’ll bet that Bougie friend of yours, Chloe, dared you. You’re too much of a ‘fraidy cat to ride a roller coaster.”

“Be quiet, Big Head.” I cut my eyes at him.
